“Something Ventured” is a Documentary Film Worth Seeing June 13, 2011

I highly recommend checking out an important new film, “Something Ventured,” a documentary about the rise of Silicon Valley, startup business culture, and venture capital (http://somethingventuredthemovie.com/index.php).  Directed by Emmy-Award-winning documentary filmmakers Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine, the film tells the story of the creation of an industry that went on to become the single greatest engine of innovation and economic growth in the 20th century.   Premiered at SXSW (the South by Southwest Film Festival) this past winter and then shown to very positive reviews at the Seattle and San Francisco International Film Festivals, the documentary really gives a feel for how startup culture has been created in our lifetimes, and continues to evolve.

There will be a special showing of the film Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 6:30pm in Blau Auditorium at UM Ross School of Business, hosted by Ann Arbor New Tech.   http://www.a2newtech.org/events/17267590/?a=socialmedia&eventId=17267590&action=detail

Film host Ann Arbor New Tech — a.k.a. A2geeks, a networking group launched a little over two years ago – holds monthly meetups at the Ross.  Most of these meetings don’t involve movie showings – they actually have a networking and business-pitch format, as described here (cribbed from their website http://www.a2newtech.org/) :

“The Ann Arbor New Tech meetup welcomes members from any school, sector, or industry function (e.g. entrepreneurs, technologists, investors, lawyers, marketers, students, bloggers, etc.) interested in local high-tech startups.

“We seek to foster tech entrepreneurship by facilitating communication, providing access to resources, and creating community. Our members meet every few weeks to participate in demo events, educational panel and speaker events, unconferences, and happy hours.

“Our flagship event (3-5 companies each get 5 minutes to demo, 5 minutes to answer questions, then open announcements and networking) is the third Tuesday of each month, 6:30 PM at Blau Auditorium at UM’s Ross Business School. E-mail organizers@a2newtech.org if you’d like to demo or sponsor!”

Thanks to A2geeks for making this showing of “Something Ventured” possible in Ann Arbor.  For those of you in other areas, keep your eyes peeled for this film!
